Spurr

Joanne Ivy MacDonald

Joanne was born September 12, 1930 in Boston, Massachusetts to John K. and Eleanor I. MacDonald, both deceased.  She was a graduate of Malden High School. Prior to being married, Joanne was active in local politics and worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In 1960, she and Thomas H. Spurr, Jr. were married and they moved to Detroit, Chicago and Minneapolis with his employer, American Can Co., before settling in Colerain Township in 1970. She was an active school and community volunteer, past President of the Welcome Wagon Club of Cincinnati, and a Sunday school religious education teacher.  After her children went to college, she worked at the IRS for 20 years, specializing in pension and retirement accounts. A life-long Catholic, she attended St. John the Baptist Church (Dry Ridge) while a resident of Colerain Township and became a member of St. Gertrude Church in Madeira in 2012. Joanne loved crafts, knitting, gardening, playing bridge, and always worked the daily crossword puzzle. Joanne’s beloved husband preceded her in death in 1977.

Joanne is survived by her son Thomas H. Spurr III (Christin) and daughter Valerie Ann Spurr, both of Cincinnati and beloved granddaughters Elizabeth Spurr, of Cincinnati and Caroline Spurr of Williamsburg, Virginia.  She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Catherine Spurr and Jo-Anne Spurr both of Boston, three nieces, five nephews and many great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be Monday, March 19th from 4:00–7:00 pm at Thomas-Justin Memorial, 7500 Montgomery Road, Kenwood (45236).  After a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church in Malden, MA, Joanne will be buried with her husband at Forest Dale Cemetery in Malden.
